Hundreds of demonstrators have been arrested in the last 24 hours as protests decrying Israel's bombardment of Gaza continue at university campuses across the nation. The majority of demonstrations have called for the divestment from companies that support Israel and the war in Gaza. Meanwhile, at the University of Arizona, law enforcement used pepper balls and rubber bullets against protesters Wednesday, the university said in a statement. The Los Angeles Police Department has also issued a city-wide "tactical alert" related to a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA, a law enforcement source told CNN. University of Texas at Dallas: At least 17 arrests have been made at the campus as of Wednesday evening, school officials said.

The protesters occupying Hamilton Hall on the campus of Columbia University seemed ready to stay a while. They had a microwave, an electric teakettle and sleeping bags, images distributed by the police show. In another classroom, they made a chart for security duties in two-hour shifts, and listed three Maoist revolutionary slogans as inspiration, according to the police videos. For two weeks, Columbia’s campus had been the focal point of a growing crisis on college campuses around the country. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators set up tent encampments, held rallies and otherwise attempted to disrupt academic activities in an attempt to force universities to meet several demands.

At the University of California, Los Angeles, student journalists reporting on violent clashes between protesters said they were assaulted and gassed. On some college campuses rocked by the demonstrations, access has been restricted to students only, effectively making student journalists the only reliable news media reporting on the campus protests and clashes. Student Editor Anna Dai-Liu told CNN that she was gassed, and other student reporters were assaulted, with one reporter being taken to emergency care. “Student journalists have a unique and essential role on their campuses in observing and disseminating news,” said Gary Green, executive director of the Student Press Law Center. Jelani Cobb, dean of the Columbia Journalism School, also applauded student journalists for their reporting on the campus protests.

Among the throng of Columbia University student protesters gathered outside Hamilton Hall on campus early Tuesday morning was a gray-haired woman in her 60s. In a video captured by The New York Times, the protesters can be seen trying to push their way toward the building as the woman — decades older than the crowd — pleads with two young counterprotesters trying to block them from barricading the occupied building. “This is ridiculous,” the woman says, as the men stand with their backs against the doors, apparently trying to keep protesters away from the building. “We’re trying to end a genocide in Gaza.”The woman at the center of this encounter on the night protesters stormed and then occupied the building was Lisa Fithian, a longtime activist and trainer for left-wing protesters whom the Police Department would later publicly describe as a “confirmed professional agitator.”

New York City police raided Columbia University late on Tuesday to arrest dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators, some of whom had seized an academic building, and to remove a protest encampment the Ivy League school had sought to dismantle for nearly two weeks. Shortly after police moved in, Columbia University President Minouche Shafik released a letter in which she requested police stay on campus until at least May 17 — two days after graduation — "to maintain order and ensure that encampments are not re-established." Within three hours the campus had been cleared of protesters, said a police spokesperson, adding "dozens" of arrests were made. Students standing just outside the campus jeered police with shouts of "Shame, shame!"
